Character Interview Before You Write
Discover a character through questions only they can answer.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Interview my character so I can write them with specificity. Character name and role in the story: [CHARACTER]. Genre and setting: [GENRE_SETTING]. What I already know about them: [KNOWN_FACTS]. Act as an interviewer and ask me one question at a time, up to twelve, waiting for my answer each time. Do not ask clichéd questions about favourite colours. Instead ask about contradictions (what they say they want versus what they do), what they would steal, what they are ashamed of, the last time they lied and to whom, how they behave when no one is watching, what small object they would save from a fire, and what they refuse to talk about. After each answer, reflect back one detail that could become a scene. At the end produce a one-page character sheet with sections for want, need, fear, flaw, habits of speech, three telling details, and one secret, written from my answers only. Mark any item I did not answer as [UNDECIDED] rather than inventing it. Quality bar: every detail on the sheet should be usable in a scene.
