CODEOWNERS File Draft and Ownership Map

Table output

Create a CODEOWNERS file and ownership map for your repository folders, with fallback owners, review load checks and gaps to resolve.

The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.

[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.

Help me draft a CODEOWNERS file for a GitHub repository. Folder structure: [FOLDER_STRUCTURE]. Teams or people and what they own: [OWNERS_AND_AREAS]. Files that need extra care (for example billing, security, infrastructure): [SENSITIVE_PATHS]. Default reviewer if nobody owns a path: [DEFAULT_OWNER]. Number of pull requests per week: [WEEKLY_PR_VOLUME].

Output three things. One, the CODEOWNERS file in a code block, with comments explaining each group, ordered so that more specific patterns come after general ones, since later matches take precedence [VERIFY]. Two, an ownership table with the columns Path pattern, Owner, Backup owner, Why, and Review load risk (low, medium, high). Three, a gap report listing paths with no owner, owners who appear on more than a third of the paths, and any single person who is the only owner of a sensitive path.

Explain in plain terms how this interacts with branch protection and the "require review from code owners" setting, flagging all setting names and syntax details with [VERIFY] for my GitHub plan. Remind me that handles must be real GitHub users or teams with repository access, and that I should confirm each one.

Do not invent team names, usernames or folders; use only what I gave you and mark unknowns as placeholders. Do not treat this as a security control by itself.

Add a worked example with invented figures: 5 teams, 12 top-level folders, 40 pull requests per week, and show how you would estimate each owner's weekly review count by assuming each pull request touches 1.5 owned areas.
