Commit Message Writer and Cleanup Guide
Turn messy changes into clear conventional-style commit messages, with a subject line, body and a plan to split mixed changes into commits.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Help me write good commit messages. Here is what I changed: [DESCRIPTION_OF_CHANGES]. The files or areas touched: [FILES_OR_AREAS]. The reason for the change: [REASON]. Our commit convention, if any (for example Conventional Commits or none): [COMMIT_CONVENTION]. Related issue: [ISSUE_REFERENCE]. First, tell me whether my changes look like one logical commit or several, and propose a split with a short reason for each commit. Then for each commit write a message with a subject line of 50 characters or fewer in the imperative mood, a blank line, and a body wrapped near 72 characters that explains what and why, not how. Add a footer line for the issue reference only if I gave one. Provide two alternative subject lines for the most important commit so I can choose. Next, give me a small table of common mistakes with the columns Mistake, Example, Better version, using three examples drawn from my own description. Finish with a short checklist I can read before running git commit. Do not invent changes I did not describe. If my description is too vague to write an honest message, ask me up to three clarifying questions first, one at a time. Commands for rewriting history are only to be mentioned as options flagged [VERIFY], with a warning about shared branches. Add a worked example with invented figures: one change that fixes a rounding bug in invoice totals (2 files) and renames a helper function across 7 files, and show how you would split it.
