Refine my research questions. My topic and what I'm curious about: [TOPIC]. The decision it will inform: [DECISION]. What we already know: [KNOWN].

Ask me up to four clarifying questions, one at a time. Then rewrite my curiosity as three to five research questions that are specific, answerable, and linked to the decision, and show which method could answer each. Check each question for assumptions and for being too broad or too narrow. Provide a prioritised list and the questions that would be nice-to-have. Add a statement of what the research will not answer.

Add a short exercise to separate research questions from interview questions, with examples, and a test that each question can be answered with evidence rather than opinion. Provide a template to record the final questions together with the decision they inform, who needs the answer, and by when.

Also add a short example of a vague question turned into a sharp one, using an invented topic, so I can see the process.

Curiosity: "Why do people not use our reports?"
Questions I asked: What decision is it for? What do you already know?
Refined questions
1. What do managers do in the week before they need a report? (interviews)
2. Which report sections do users open? (analytics)
3. What stops managers from sharing reports with their teams? (diary or interviews)
Method mapping: 1 interviews; 2 analytics; 3 interviews.
Priority: question 1.
Will not answer: whether a redesign will increase use.
Statement of limits: the study cannot tell us whether a redesign would raise report use, only why it is low now.
