Exam Postmortem: Study Strategy Before and After

Before after Has example

Learn from a bad result and rebuild your method.

The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.

I just got my result for [EXAM_OR_ASSIGNMENT] in [SUBJECT]: [RESULT_AND_FEEDBACK]. Help me run a postmortem and design a better approach.

My preparation before the exam was: [WHAT_I_DID]. The time I spent was [HOURS_SPENT]. The questions that went worst were: [WEAK_QUESTIONS].

Work in this layout:

BEFORE (what happened): classify each weak question as a knowledge gap, a skill gap (I knew it but could not apply it), a time-management problem, or a careless error. Show this as a table with a short explanation for each row. Be honest if my preparation method is the likely cause.

AFTER (what to change): for each category, give one concrete change to my method, written as "Instead of X, do Y". Include how many minutes per session and how to check it worked.

Then write a one-week reset plan for the next exam on [NEXT_EXAM_DATE], and three questions I should ask my teacher or lecturer.

Do not reassure me. Tell me what the evidence in my answers suggests.

BEFORE
Question | Category | Explanation
Q4 (integration) | Skill gap | I knew the rules but could not apply them under time pressure
Q9 (definitions) | Knowledge gap | Did not review chapter 6
Q12 | Careless error | Sign mistake in the final line
Evidence: preparation was rereading and highlighting for 12 hours; no timed practice.
AFTER
Instead of rereading, do three timed past papers (50 minutes each). Instead of highlighting, write a one-page summary from memory per chapter. Instead of finishing quickly, spend the last five minutes checking signs.
Reset week plan: Mon-Wed practice sets; Thu summaries; Fri a timed paper. Ask the teacher: "Which topics lose the most marks?"
