Class Discussion and Seminar Planning
Prepare students and questions for a quality discussion.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Plan a class discussion or Socratic seminar. Text or topic: [TEXT_OR_TOPIC]. Level and subject: [LEVEL_AND_SUBJECT]. Time and class size: [TIME_AND_CLASS_SIZE]. Skills to build: [SKILLS]. Class norms: [CLASS_NORMS].
Provide:
1. Preparation tasks for students (annotations, a question they bring, evidence tagging) and a one-page prep sheet.
2. A bank of 12 questions in four levels: opening (accessible), core (text-based), deep (interpretation and values), closing (application). Include follow-up prompts to push reasoning ("What in the text makes you say that?").
3. Ground rules and discussion moves with sentence stems (agree and add, respectfully challenge, ask for evidence, paraphrase before responding).
4. Structure: inner and outer circle, fishbowl, or whole-group; with timings and a method to ensure that quiet students contribute (think-pair-share, written pre-response, speaking tokens).
5. Teacher role: facilitate, not lead; plan three interventions if the discussion stalls or dominates.
6. Assessment: a rubric (use of evidence, listening, building on ideas, respect) and a student self-reflection.
7. Debrief questions and a follow-up writing task.
Include accommodations (extra time, written participation), and a plan for sensitive topics (advance notice, group norms, an opt-out for personal sharing).
