Create:
1. A decision tree for choosing references: if a person supervised me directly in the last three years, then rank them first; if the relationship is more than five years old, then use only if they remember specific work; if the person is a friend, then skip unless there is no one else. Apply it to my list and tell me my best three.
2. A request message for each type (former manager, colleague, client) of under 100 words, asking permission, not assuming it, and offering an easy way to decline.
3. A one-page briefing to send after they agree: the role, the three strengths to speak to with a short reminder of the project for each, the likely questions, and my deadline.
4. A thank-you note and an update message after the job decision.
