Word Report Template Built on Styles and an Automatic Contents Page
Plan a style-driven report so headings, contents and numbering update themselves.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Help me design a report template in Microsoft Word that relies on styles and not on manual formatting. Report type and audience: [REPORT_TYPE_AND_AUDIENCE]. Typical length: [PAGE_COUNT]. House look (fonts, colours, logo position): [HOUSE_STYLE]. Sections every report must have: [REQUIRED_SECTIONS]. Style sheet as a Markdown table I can copy: style name, use, font and size, spacing before and after, and whether it appears in the contents page. Cover Title, Heading 1 to 3, Body text, Caption, Quote, Table text, List bullet, List number, Header and Footer (for example Title for the cover, 28 pt bold, not in contents; Heading 1 for chapter titles, 18 pt). Build order: set the styles, apply heading numbering through a multilevel list linked to the heading styles, insert the contents page, add captions and a list of figures, set page numbering and section breaks for a cover page. Give the menu path for each step as you know it and mark paths you are unsure of [VERIFY in my version of Word]; do not claim features I have not described. Worked proof: create a dummy report with three chapters, two sub-sections each, a figure and a table, and run a ten-point test (rename a heading, update the contents, move a section, insert a figure, check numbering, captions and page numbers follow), recording pass or fail at each step. List the five commonest mistakes (pressing Enter many times for spacing, colouring text by hand instead of changing the style) and how to avoid them. Write a one-page how-to in six numbered steps for a colleague who has never used styles, including what to do when text pastes in with its own formatting. List what to save in the template file, and name the file and the folder where the master copy lives.

Invented style table rows. Title | cover page | 28 pt, bold | not in contents. Heading 1 | chapter titles | 18 pt | level 1 in contents, numbered 1. Heading 2 | sections | 14 pt | level 2, numbered 1.1. Body text | paragraphs | 11 pt, 6 pt after | not in contents. Caption | figures and tables | 9 pt italic | feeds the list of figures. Test: rename Heading 2 "Method" to "Methods" and update fields; the contents page entry should change.
