Stripe Failed Payment and Decline Pattern Analysis
Find causes of failed payments and recovery opportunities.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Analyse failed payments using anonymised data only; do not ask for card or personal details. Export: date, amount, status, decline code or failure reason, payment method type, country, retry results, and customer type (new or returning): [PAYMENTS_EXPORT]. Counts of attempts and successes: [COUNTS]. Separate failures the customer can fix (expired card, insufficient funds, authentication not completed) from those needing the bank or processor, marking uncertain mappings of decline codes [VERIFY]. Worked table (invented): 2,000 attempts, 1,880 succeeded (94 percent); 120 declines: insufficient funds 42, expired card 28, authentication not completed 25, generic decline 25; retry recoveries 31 of 120 (25.8 percent); value at risk 4,800 (average order 40 times 120), recovered 1,240. Calculate success rate overall and by segment (reason, country, payment method, new or returning) with numerator and denominator, recovery rate after retries and the value of failed payments. Highlight any segment that differs by more than five points and has enough attempts to matter, and say how many attempts that is; state sample sizes. Return a table and three hypotheses with tests, one at a time with a defined measure and duration: reminder emails to update cards, clearer authentication prompts, offering an alternative payment method, retry timing [VERIFY]. Add a customer message that helps them complete payment and a monthly dashboard of five numbers.
