XLOOKUP Instead of VLOOKUP: Convert My Formulas

Table output Has example

Convert your VLOOKUP formulas to XLOOKUP in Excel or Google Sheets, with a before and after table and notes on missing values and ranges.

The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.

[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.

Convert my VLOOKUP formulas to XLOOKUP and explain every change. The app is [SPREADSHEET_APP] and my version or plan is [APP_VERSION] ([VERIFY] that XLOOKUP is available in this version). My existing formulas: [VLOOKUP_FORMULAS]. A description of the sheet layout, with column letters and header names: [SHEET_LAYOUT]. What should show when nothing is found: [NOT_FOUND_TEXT].

Provide a table with columns: Original formula, XLOOKUP version, What changed, Behaviour differences to watch. Then explain in plain words, using my own sheet layout:

1. The three XLOOKUP arguments I use most (lookup value, lookup range, return range) and how they replace the column index number.

2. How to handle not found with the fourth argument, without wrapping the formula in IFERROR.

3. Exact versus approximate matching and why the default differs from VLOOKUP.

4. How to look up to the left, return several columns at once, and search from the bottom.

5. Three mistakes that make results wrong (ranges of different sizes, text versus number, trailing spaces).

Finish with a short migration plan: how to test the new formulas next to the old ones, a comparison check formula, and when to keep VLOOKUP for compatibility with colleagues on older versions.

Use only the columns and names I gave you; if my layout is unclear, ask a question first. Show each formula as text I can paste, and do not claim a feature exists in my version without the [VERIFY] flag.

Add a worked example with invented figures: product codes in column A, prices in column C, and a lookup of code P-204 from a list in F2.

See an example result (fictional data)
Invented example
Old: =VLOOKUP(F2, A:C, 3, FALSE)
New: =XLOOKUP(F2, A:A, C:C, "Not found")

What changed: the column index 3 is replaced by the return range C:C, so inserting a column in between no longer breaks the formula. The default match is exact, so no FALSE is needed.

Check: in G2 enter =IF(H2=I2,"OK","Check"), where H2 is the old formula and I2 is the new one, then fill down. Any row marked Check needs a look before you delete the old column.

[VERIFY] that XLOOKUP exists in your Excel version.

Illustrative only, made-up data. Your results will differ and must be reviewed.
