Checks and Reconciliation Formulas
Build self-checking sheets.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Add checks to my workbook so errors show themselves. App: [SPREADSHEET_APP]. Workbook purpose and structure: [WORKBOOK_PURPOSE_AND_STRUCTURE]. Totals that must agree: [RECONCILIATIONS]. Data entry areas: [INPUT_AREAS]. Design a checks sheet with a table: Check | Formula | Expected | Result | Status (OK/ERROR) | What to do. Include: totals of detail equal totals of summary (with a tolerance, ABS(a-b)<0.01); balance checks (debits equal credits, assets equal liabilities plus equity); row counts between source and report; no negative values where impossible; no blanks in required fields (COUNTBLANK); no duplicates in keys; dates within a valid range; percentages between 0 and 1; sums of percentages equal 100; no error values in key ranges (SUMPRODUCT(--ISERROR(range))=0); lookups all matched (COUNTIF of "Not found" equals 0); unit consistency; and cross-period continuity (closing balance equals next opening balance). Add an overall status cell shown at the top of every main sheet (green or red), a log for exceptions with date and note, protection of the checks sheet, and a rule that nobody shares the workbook while any check is red. Provide sample checks for a simple budget workbook with expected results and one deliberately broken example showing the check failing.
